Original Review: May 2006 for lunch
Gilpin Lodge is a luxury hotel on the Crook road, near the Windermere golf club. It is a lovely hotel with beautiful grounds, an abundance of fresh flowers and real fires in a number of the common areas. It also has a long standing reputation for excellent food and has recently been awarded a Michelin

We visited it to try their Cumbrian course lunch and at £20 per head for Michelin standard food we came with great expectations. On the whole the food was great, my Goats cheese starter with a baby beetroot was perfect, but where was the goats cheese from? It didn't say. Cecilia's pressed duck served with pickled carrots was equally good, but where was the duck from? The presentation of the dishes was excellent. I had a Sea Bass with tapenade dressing, again beautifully presented, where from, I have no idea. Cecilia's braised lamb was perfect, but rather than coming with the tomato confit and broad beans, the reason why Cecilia chose this dish, it came with carrots and broccoli and we can only assume the lamb was from Cumbria. We don't really do desserts, but what we ordered looked really good and tasted as good as it looked. So would we come back, yes, it was very good lunch, the dining room looks out onto the beautiful gardens and is naturally light and airy. Heating was provided by a rather cool looking real fire. My only real complaint was the lack of specific information of where my food was coming from. I'm sorry – this is important to me, particularly as it was billed as a Cumbrian lunch. The service was professional and friendly.
