Original review: May 20, for dinner Unfortunately, we don't get to eat out in Carlisle often enough, but we still claim that Keez Bistro was a bit of a find (although strictly speaking they found us). Although it's located in what can only be described as the basement of a corner building on Cecil Street, you soon forget that you are underground and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere.
The menu changes every month, and much of the produce is sourced locally and it's imaginative and interesting. Also, being used to South Lakes prices, it's great to eat in a restaurant where you get proper value for money! (starters ranged from four to just over six pounds, mains from ten to fifteen).
Before our food came out, we were served home baked bread, which was excellent. For a starter I had the Carpaccio of venison with creamed horseradish and herb salad. I must confess that when I order carpaccio, I expect to be served something raw – whether it be fillet or salmon or whatever – so I was a bit disappointed to find that the thinly sliced venison was cooked. It was tasty, though, as was Martin's starter of Warm Asparagus and Pancetta Toasted Muffin, served with a poached egg. The latter was executed perfectly. Little Lukie had a warm lemon and crab risotto, which in my opinion was actually the best of the starters. My main was Cumin Spiced Cumbrian Lamb Cutlets with celeriac mash and roasted cherry tomatoes, which was really fresh and perfectly cooked. Martin had Pan Fried Tuna Steak served on mash potato with salsa verde which he really enjoyed as well. So, if you want a good, home cooked and seasonal meal with local ingredients in Carlisle, I'd suggest giving Keez Bistro a try!
