Original review: September 13, 2008, for lunch This pub was a serendipitous find – for our weekend in the West Lakes, we had been recommended the pub across the road in Nether Wasdale, but it wasn't open for lunch. We liked the look of the sign for the Screes Inn (who says design doesn't matter?), as well as the menu, so we decided to give it a try.
The menu is a lot more interesting than in most pubs, particularly the vegetarian options, which include Goat's cheese strudel filled with roast parsnips, celeriac, leek and apple, served with a white wine and mustard sauce, as well as Screes vegetarian chilli with sour cream, guacamole and nachos, topped with grilled goat's cheese and more. So I'm not sure what possessed me to order the scampi, but they were in fact so juicy and lovely that I asked whether they were home breaded (not so – I've yet to visit a pub where they are). Martin had Spinach, sweet potato & coconut curry with rice, poppadom and mango chutney, and there is no doubt that this dish was created in the kitchen; absolutely gorgeous flavours. Little Luke ordered (well...) Woodall's Cumberland sausage with chips, and vegetables. And it was such a wonderful surprise when the latter arrived, and turned out not to be bland steamed stuff, but rosemary roasted parsnips and carrots. Delicious! With most of the main courses coming in under 8 pounds and all starters under 4, a meal at the Screes represents great value for money to boot.
