Original review: September 14, 2008, for lunch There are some lovely pubs strewn around the equally lovely country side in the Eskdale and Wasdale area. The Brook House Inn is within easy walking distance of the Dalegarth end station of the La'al Ratty steam train, which is how we came upon it. This is a very traditional pub, which offers real ales and 150 malt whiskies. The lunch menu is a fairly typical pub one. Starters cost around 5-6 pounds, among them a black pudding tower, prawns in garlic butter and home made paté. Mains are between 8 and 15 pounds, and include Beef and beer pie, Trio of lamb chops and Chicken Madras. There are also Salads and Sandwiches.
Martin had a toasted ciabatta with tomato and mozzarella with basil. He enjoyed it, although he was after something interesting for Sunday lunch, and couldn't really find any main course that inspired him. I had one of the mains: Pan fried chicken served on a garlic crouton with a blue cheese sauce, potatoes and vegetables. I confess I am not sure what I was expecting, perhaps the choice was unwise; but at 10.95, I would expect more than a few pieces of plain fried chicken on a piece of bread with some new potatoes and unseasoned steamed vegetables. The sauce was the only saving grace. We'd give this place a second chance – the dinner menu looks a bit more interesting. But based on this experience, I'm afraid "average" is the word that comes to mind.
