Original review: August 30 2008, for lunch, with toddler. We definitely didn't go to Pizza Express with a restaurant review in mind – this is a national chain for goodness sake! But I had had a couple of good experiences at the sister restaurant in Brighton, and we wanted some good pasta for 2-year old Luke on a Saturday in town, so in we went. We arrived just after 12, which was good timing, because the place quickly filled up. The staff was helpful with high chair and crayons, and we instantly felt comfortable.
But it's the food that really surprised us. Nothing out of a box in the freezer at all, from what we could tell – good, fresh ingredients and clearly freshly cooked. Martin and I shared a pizza, which was a mistake. We can normally never finish a pizza each, but these are deliciously thin and a perfect size for one person. The topping was goat's cheese, spinach and roasted red onions – a tasty meal. The pizzas ranged from about 7-9 pounds, which, for a filling main course is pretty reasonable. Luke ordered pasta with a creamy tomato and mozzarella sauce, which was one of the nicest children's dishes I've tasted in the Lakes.
So – why shouldn't we rate this place, even though it's not strictly speaking a local establishment? Some Cumbrian based eateries could learn a thing or two about fresh food from Pizza Express.
