CAFÉ RATING Would we come back? Yes High point: Relaxing and inspiring premises Could be improved: Almost all the hot dishes were between 7 and 8 pounds, which is a bit more than I would expect to pay for self service food. On the other hand, I'd rather spend 7.95 for a curry here than at any other motorway service station.

Original review: February 14 and March 9, for lunch on both occasions. (this is rated as a café because it has cafeteria service) We were, of course, very curious to come and try out this newly renovated, unique motorway service station. It is the only family owned motorway services in the country, has won national recognition and is run by the Dunning family, who farm the land on either side of the M6. In addition to what you'd normally find at motorway services, Tebay also has Farm Shops, complete with a butcher's counter and lots of local goodies on offer.
But it was the restaurant we'd come to try out. There is a hot found counter as well as a deli section with sandwiches of different types and salads. We had hot food on both occasions (while the salads looked very fresh, they looked a bit too traditional for my taste buds). We had Cumberland sausage, lamb chops, chips and a variety of vegetables, which was all streets ahead of normal motorway service fair. On my second visit I had a delicious vegetarian (chick pea, spinach, lentil and potato) curry, the most flavourful meal I have ever had by the side of the M6.
Two and a half year old Lukie enjoyed the experience as well, which for him included sausage and chips plus a play in the lovely play area. It was nice to be able to sit in the family lounge and not have to worry about you child running around!
Other things I liked included the table of relishes, such as tartar sauce, tomato ketchup, mint sauce, horseradish and grain mustard, all served out of glass jars. Also – for once a solitary meal was OK, because I had a view over the pond, fells and snow covered mountain tops in the background.
