April 5, 2009.
I became a little wary when we (me, Martin & Luke, 2) turned into the drive of this fantastic looking old manor north of Keswick and the  first thing we saw was two signs – one on either side of the road – saying "No service vehicles". In my experience, that says something about the type of management ruling the establishment. And sure enough, when we arrived up at the extensive car parking area there were a dozen signs for what type of visitor should go to what part of the car park. We scratched our heads and parked in the section clearly marked "Staff Parking"...

So it came as no real surprise that after both Martin and I had gone inside to look at the menu, and we had decided to give the £25 two course Sunday lunch a go, we were met by a manager type in the door saying "Oh, sorry I didn't realise you had a little one with you. I'm very sorry we don't have children under 12 in the hotel".

So – his completely empty restaurant turned away about £70 pounds worth of business and a write-up from artisan-food.com. I'm afraid we "don't do reviews of restaurants who discriminate against hungry people who have not bothered to grow up in time for their meal".

(No doubt the Queen's corgy's were more than welcome inside when she visited UM)
