Original review: April 18, 2009, for lunch This pub is in the middle of one of south Lakeland's most picturesque villages, Elterwater, and by virtue of its location, it would most likely get lots of business without even trying too hard. The wonderful thing is that despite this they DO try hard, and obviously genuinely care about their customers.
We went for lunch on a sunny spring day, sitting outside in the sunshine – what a lovely spot! The Britannia Inn does good, traditional, unfussy pub food. The staff were without exception friendly and accommodating and looked like they enjoyed their jobs. Martin and I decided to go halves on a cheeseburger and a portion of fish and chips (often a good benchmark of the chef's skills). Luke had Cumberland sausage and chips. The burger was good and came with a refreshingly tasty salad; not a raw red onion slice in sight, instead cocktail tomatoes and dark green leaves. The fish and chips came with tartare sauce in a small bowl, possibly home made, and the meal was very good, our only complaint would be that the batter wasn't dark and crispy enough. The fish itself was perfect though. Luke's sausage was from the excellent Plumgarth's butchery, and he enjoyed it a lot. The chips were also very good.
So – a pub we'll come back to, preferably on another sunny day.
