Original review: Lunch on May 30, 2009 Martin had come here to photograph this beautifully situated seaside pub for Christian Dymond's excellent food guide, so we decided to go the whole hog and try the food as well as admire the view. We sat in the conservatory restaurant which runs along the front of the building – it is a lovely place to have a meal, with a light breeze coming in from the sea and a marvellous view of the sands and Cartmel peninsula. (While the setting of the pub is marvellous, the interior design is a little dated, which is why it doesn't score higher on atmosphere.)
We ordered from the Light Bites menu as well as the fixed menu. I had a prawn and avocado sandwich with lemon mayonnaise, which was as good as I had expected. I also went for a starter of deep fried chilly prawns on a sweet and sour sauce. The sauce was fantastic, and the tiger prawns were fine, although not as exciting as I had hoped. Martin had fresh crab and salmon fish cakes on a white whine and fresh herb cream sauce, which he really enjoyed. He had new potatoes and stir-fried vegetables to go with the fish, and it's always so great to visit pubs where they've discovered that vegetables can be interesting and flavourful. Lukie had Waberthwaite sausage, beans and lovely home made mash.
On the whole, a good food experience, and a pub worth returning to.
