Original review: Lunch on June 3, 2009

I visited the New Moon for lunch recently with two pretty discerning chefs. We sat upstairs in a cosy room, next to warm fire and looked over the menu. The lunch menu is interesting and varied, with what seemed to be a distinct mediterranean influence to some of the dishes.

We shared a Red pepper houmous starter, this was ok, but lacked seasoning and sharpness, plus was spoiled by the addition of carrot. It was home made and served with an interesting well dressed salad, but the bread it was served with could have been toasted to give it some contrasting crispyness.

I ordered Salmon crabcake, this was much better. I liked the fact that it was served with dill mayonnaise along with new potatoes. My lunch companions ordered Crab and Avocado tartlett, which again went down really well, the other main course being a seafood risotto. All the main courses were well presented, fresh and flavourful. It seems that the chef here is a little too fond of pesto, as this ended up in a few strange places, like drizzled on top of the risotto fex, too strong a flavour for what was a well balanced dish without it.

The portion sizes left some room for dessert, two between three. This being Chocolate brownie and Sticky toffee pudding. Similar to the mains, well presented and they didn't dissapoint, but not perfection either.

The service was prompt and friendly, with a nice atmosphere. I would have no hesitation in returning and eating here again when in Kendal, particularly given that the menu is varied, interesting and changes regularly. But I did feel that the total price for what we ate and the soft drinks we had was a little too high.
