Original review: Lunch on March 16, 2006
In February, Sharrow Bay launched a great initiative; serving set lunch menus based on local produce, which the restaurant now also sources directly (see article under Cookin'). We were of course intrigued and went along. The setting is hard to beat, with a dining room overlooking Ullswater and (in this case) the snow covered mountains beyond. The interior is traditional, which no doubt is just what most guests are looking for –  but a little dated; e g the fire places have fitted 1970s electric glowing coal fires – eek!

Anyway, that's perhaps a bit beside the point. The three course lunch (at 25 pounds) was really more like a five course meal, with a tasty foie gras starter and a wonderfully tart citrus sorbet between the starter and the main course. We had Deer'n'Dexter Saddle of Venison on red onion marmalade with chestnut mash and port & rosemary sauce to start, which was very tasty in a subtle sort of way. For main I had Savin Hill Farm traditional roast loin of pork with pie of the shoulder, sage & onion stuffing, apple sauce and pork gravy. It came with a gorgeous sweet and sour sauce, which really worked with the otherwise quite inconspicuous flavours. Martin had Ashton Castle Farm Belted Galloway sirloin with a casserole of seasonal vegetables and spring onion mash, which he really enjoyed, particularly the meat and the sauce. The pud was a rhubarb cheesecake with rhubarb compote, the compote in particular was heavenly.

This is probably a little too pricy and formal for us as far as lunch is concerned, but it's definitely a memorable experience, particularly given the local food.
