Original review:
Jan 17, 2010 for lunch.
The Mortal Man hotel and pub has been under new ownership since June 2009, and after a recommendation via Twitter, we decided to try it out. This pub is beautifully situated in Troutbeck, with gardens overlooking the valley - on a slightly warmer day, that's definitely where you'd want to have your lunch. Inside is cosy in the winter though, and arriving early, we got a table next to the roaring log fire.

The menu offers traditional, hearty pub fare, including a couple of good sounding vegetarian dishes - fennel and leek lasagne and wild mushroom risotto. We ordered Fish and chips with mushy peas and tartar sauce (home made and delicious) and Gammon with chips, fried egg and pineapple. Luke had children's sausages, mash and gravy (and peas, but he won't go near those). The food was generally good; the gammon was excellent and that dish was the best one. The fish was a bit dry, probably due to the fact that we had the first serving of the day and the oil hadn't had time to get hot enough. The sausages were also slightly over-cooked. But other than that, no complaints (apart from the raw red onion in the salad - as ever). Delicious mushy peas, great mash and good chips.

The prices were about what we've come to get used to in pubs in South Lakeland - mains from £8.75 to 14.95 - with most dishes in the lower half of that band. Sandwiches are about five pounds, which is very reasonable for a pub. Kid's meals are 3.95, and their puds are 1.95.

We would come back here, probably on a warm spring day when we could sit outside.
