Original review: Jan 30, 2010 for lunch. This pub in central Hawkshead fits right in; picturesque outside, traditional inside, with log fire in winter. There are some tables outside, a great place for a pint on a slightly warmer day than when we went. The pub itself is cosy, the adjacent dining room, where we had our lunch, could do with a bit of a face lift.
It's always a good sign when a pub's menu consists of about half a dozen starters and maybe a few more mains – long menus always make me suspicious that all will not be home cooked. Unfortunately the fish and chips were off, so I had a venison and herb burger and Martin had a lamb burger, both came with chips and side salad. I'm happy to say this was the best burger I've had in a pub in a very long time. Very good meat with lots of flavour and suitable herbs, served on a toasted ciabatta which held its own – so often burger buns are just hopelessly soggy. The salad was good too, overall a very good buy at £7.95. The other mains were also generally under £10, which is relatively affordable for a pub in this part of the world. Luke had a sausage (with beans and chips), and it was very flavourful as well, and perfectly cooked, i e not so hard on the outside as to be a problem for a 3-year old.
Overall, a good pub lunch experience and we'd call again.
