Original Review: March 2006 I've eaten here three times this March 2006 with the Dining Club but previously Paul and I dined during the winter in their oak panelled dining room with stone mullion windows, in front of a roaring log fire, and a brilliantly polished wooden floor.
Nick Lawler prides himself on being connected to the food he and co-chef Helen Milburn presents. He keeps his own pigs, (Saddlebacks and Silkies), Light Sussex hens and has a keen father in law tending the veggie plot. Although Winder Hall looks grand on the outside the welcome and relaxed atmosphere inside makes for a very unstuffy country house hotel. One of the great things about Winder is the staff. Nick Lawler is a friendly host and has a wonderful team to support him. Don't be surprised if you get invited into the kitchen a rare treat!
My favourite dish so far has been a sweet and tender confit of duck sitting on fresh chicory with roasted pine nuts and a honey and red wine vinaigrette. The attention to detail from local flowers in the entrance and hand made chocolates to finish make for a great meal out and the organic wines round things off with no headaches!
