Riverside Bar, tel 017687 77208. Open 11 am - 11 pm, food served 12–2 pm and 6.30-9 pm daily.
Most recent visit to the pub: Saturday, January 28, for lunch.

I have this thing about pub salads, they are more often than not awful: a few iceberg lettuce leaves, pale tomatoes, great chunks of raw red onion and green peppers. So I felt quite brave ordering an avocado and stilton salad with orange and walnut dressing at the Riverside bar. When it arrived, I was thrilled – rocket leaves, perfectly soft avocado, tiny slivers of onion, luscious cocktail tomatoes - and so on. Martin had a rumpsteak sandwich, also tasty with a side salad of rocket and cocktail tomatoes. And the prices were unbeatable – all starters were less than 4 pounds (the soup 2.50!), and the main courses were mostly between 6 and 9 pounds. My only complaint was the salad dressing, which appeared to be a herby oil; it could have done with a bit of flavour, some lemon or vinegar, as it was it gave the salad a slightly greasy flavour.

The pub has a nice open fire, but is not particularly cosy inside. However, I can imagine coming back in the summer and sitting outside by the river - it's in a lovely spot in this beautiful valley.

The Riverside Bar is attached to the Scafell Hotel in Rosthwaite, which you pass driving a long the main road up Borrowdale.
