6 months ago I left the hustle and bustle of Leeds behind, heading to the Lake District in search of a more peaceful life. However, there is one thing I do miss about the wonderful Yorkshire town, a good gastro pub.
Wandering around Bowness on a crisp January morning looking for a refreshing pint and a decent meal I walked into The Angel Inn. Not your typical Cumbrian pub, you are greeted by a traditional roaring log fire but that’s where it ends. Wooden floors, chocolate leather couches, plasma screen TV and cream walls. What more could a city boy want? Excellent beer and fantastic food.
Sitting down in front of the fire with a pint of lager I started looking through the menu, not the biggest, but carefully chosen dishes give everyone excellent choice. For me it had to be the fillet steak with chunky chips, mushrooms and tomato, with a side order of broccoli covered in rarebit.
Tucking into my second pint, a happy smiling waitress brought my steak. Slicing into the perfectly cooked steak I started to feel guilty about disturbing the excellently presented meal. I can honestly say I have never eaten steak with that much flavour, melting in my mouth. Chomping through the rest of the meal was a pleasure, a decent size portion, which filled me completely, shame, I am a big dessert fan. Never mind there is always next time.
A lot of restaurants in Bowness seem to have the mentality that quality isn’t important as the majority of diners are only here for a short visit and don’t return. The Angel makes a refreshing change and I can guarantee I will definitely be returning time and time again.
