The Glass House in Ambleside shot to fame a couple of years ago when it featured on Gordon Ramsay's restaurant make-over show (the name of which now escapes me). I have no idea to what extent Gordon influenced the establishment, but it certainly is a great place to eat these days. We have mostly been here for lunch. The restaurant is housed in a Grade II listed building, an old mill which was carefully refurbished in 1995. A lot of the original mill features are still there, and the restaurant runs over a series of mezzanine floors, creating an open and light interior.

The lunch menu is not as extensive as Lucy's (another great lunch place in A-side), but it is very varied, well prepared and really good value for money. We shared three of the starter sized dishes (all between £4 and £6); Caesar salad with warm poached egg and maple glazed pancetta, Grilled king prawns with garlic butter and Spinach and peppered goats cheese tartlet with Dijon mustard vinaigrette. They were all cooked with care, had plenty of flavour and were generally very satisfying. If you are not a big eater, one of these may do for lunch, but Martin was not quite full on one and a half.

The Glass House also has a lovely outdoor eating area, which we certainly would have used, had the winter not been so persistant this year. We shall be back for dinner.
