Review on the Zest harbourside cafe in Whitehaven by Martin Campbell

Most recent visit was during Cumbria food week to sample the seafood salad they put on as a special.  Call 01946 66981

You have to put this place into perspective, it's a  harbourside cafe,  it serves good fresh food quickly and cheaply, it's busy, it's lively, the tables are close together and the chairs pretty rough. Ok so the scene is set,  what about the seafood salad? In a word, excellent. Lots of different types of seafood, including baby scallops, the mussels were tender, not too chewy, the calamari scored and sliced to make it easy to eat. They can't do crawfish, but I've been spoilt rotten in Sweden. The salad was interesting, just a little to much red onion for me, but the dressing was fantastic, a good bite to it, but not too spicy. All in all everything it promised to be. The staff were fast, friendly and fun. Would I go back? Of course I would, not for a quiet cosy lunch, but for a more or less sure fire tasty meal with a bit of a buzz guaranteed.

Zest hit the "palate on the head" with my seafood salad and now we definitely want to check out their restaurant.

This comment was posted on the site in the wrong place. I have added it here as I think it applies to this establishment, however Zest has two locations.  - Martin

I was taken to Zest by a girlfriend from Cockermouth who raved on about this fresh happening spot.  On entering i was very hopeful and to their credit the FRONT OF HOUSE STAFF were very good.

After that I found it disappointing.  I ordered duck fillet with plum sauce which was atrocious.  I still feel angry that they could serve food that bad after the obvious effort that had managed to garner them the reputation that they have.  Was it a bad day for kids masqerading as chefs; the duck fillet had been precooked some time ago and it was badly dry.

I fully intend to go back and order the same again and if it is as bad as the last time; I will do myself justice and complain.
