Linthwaite House Hotel is very hard to beat for outdoor seating area – from the terrace you have a wonderful view over Windermere Lake, the Langdales in the background and the hotel's beautiful garden in the foreground. Here we had a drink as we were looking through the menu when we visited during the Food Festival week to try out their special local lunch. The menu had an extra introduction which explained where all the produce was from, which we were impressed by. The prices were good as well; ten pounds for two courses, 13 for three – hard to beat. I have to emphasise that this deal was a special for the festival week, and as far as value for money, we can only judge it on that.

For a starter I had Ham hock pressed with grilled pear and its puree, which was a really fabolous combination of flavours and temperatures. Martin had Grilled Thornby Moor stumpy goats cheese, sweet tomato fondant, aged balsamic, which he really enjoyed as well. For main I had Goosnargh duck breast, spiced parsnip, poultry juices – very enjoyable, while hubby went for Poached potato gnocchi with pak choi and English parmesan cream. The gnocchi also came with asparagus and peas as well, and was our favourite of the two mains. This may not be one of the county's top restaurants as far as stars and rosettes go (it has two of the latter though), but the food was very good indeed, and the setting fantastic.

The lunch would have been even better could we have had it outside. On the terrace the hotel serves a sandwich-type menu, which looked good, judging by what people were eating as we took our coffee outside.
