As we work from home, we often go for a walk after lunch, up Easdale road in Grasmere. And every time we pass by the outstandingly situated Lancrigg Vegetarian Country House Hotel at the top of the road – as the public footpath runs directly in front of the building. We've had tea on the lawn before (a popular and perfect spot on a sunny day), but inexplicably, it was not until recently that we stopped in for food. Well, we shall be back!

The lunch menu consists of soups and sandwiches plus a savoury dish or two, and we went for the latter; on this day a stack (well, there was probably a fancier word, but you know what I mean) of roast vegetables and goats cheese, served with roast rosemary potatoes and a salad with a fantastic mango and mint dressing. Not only did the food look great, it had flavours to match.

We opted to eat in the dining room, but you can also have your lunch outside or in the lounge. Lunchtime trade is fairly slow, teas in the garden are popular, but it is for its mouthwatering dinners that Lancrigg is really known. If our lunch is anything to go by, I think after a few dinners in this restaurant, I might well go vegetarian... A couple of examples off the dinner menu:

• Summer vegetable, cashew and goats cheese strudel with a piquant sauce and lemon and sage new potatoes
• Thali-cauliflower and potato balti, smoked aubergine, tikka masala, lentil and coconut dhal, mushroom korma, naan bread, rice, raita and pickle

And those are only the mains. We will definitely be back for dinner.

Have a look at their website, you'll find more of the menu plus pictures to give you an idea of the fantastic premises.
