Review of Cortez in Kendal by Martin Campbell

Most recent visit  7th of December

I had forty minutes to spare before going to watch Joshua, one of my sons play drums in the United reformed Church in Kendal, almost opposite this church is the Spanish restaurant called Cortez. Feeling rather hungry I walked in and asked for a very quick meal for one. The restaurant is quite long and not very wide, it is well suited for a "family and friends" type of meal, all sitting down at one long table. Some of the seats were old church pews, with the comfortable addition of a  thick cushion.  There was a largeish group eating and a few couples further in. I liked the decor and images hung around the place, it doesn't quite give it an authentic feel, but you certainly get the idea. On each table is a bottle of virgin olive oil and a bottle of Balsamic vinegar, as well as small dishes with ground pepper and sea salt crystals, a good sign. I tried the Balsamic, I'm not sure it was a 12 year old as the bottle said, it was fairly thin, but quite acceptable.

The menu consists mainly of tapas, ie small hopefully tasty dishes that you order a few of and share with your dining companions. Just in case this wasn't your style, there were larger versions and other "main courses" listed as well.  I ordered three of the tapas sized dishes, potatoes bravas, fish cakes and chicken skewers. This was after receiving a large bottle of sparkling water served with loads of ice and a generous chunk of fresh lime. So far so good. The food arrived some twenty minutes later, the pause more normally taken up by bread and olives that were on offer, I perused the pictures instead.

The potatoes were pretty good, with the sauce quite tasty but not as flavourful as I would have liked, the fish cakes with its dip and lime were by far the best, excellent and well presented, the chicken took third place. In fairness we quite often cook Tapas style meals from our Moro cookbooks, so my expectation is pretty high. Having said that I would have no hesitation in going back to Cortez again to try more of their food. I would certainly go there with a large group, it would be really fun. The staff were all very friendly and the service was great.

Rating: total 19

Home cooked fresh food 4
Plenty of flavour 3
Good value for money 4

Cortez Chaos!!

I recently (17 december 2007) took a V.I.P. party to Cortez, the tapas restaurant in Kendal having eaten there twice before, but what an embarrassment! We had booked, and the place was three quarters full. Our cold bread was taken from us 3 times,as it was the wrong type of bread, and returned, apparently the other bread  would take 10 minutes more (presumably to de-frost),and the arrogant owner, who was not apologetic, wanted to make sure everything was "right for us" !!The white rioja was delicious but then we were totally ignored for 45 minutes. When we asked the waiter to kindly check on our order, there were lots of comings and goings,it seemed to us the order had been lost and eventually the owner/manager was over to give us a lecture!Again,no apologies,no efforts to ask if we  would like some more wine, which was long since finished,or more bread maybe, just a lecture to tell us "we dont do fast food, its all fresh ingredients (I should hope so!!)" Totally charmless and argumentative.I have eaten in the finest, and not so fine tapas restaurants in Barcelona,Madrid,Murcia etc,but have never had such rude "service".We said we would wait five more minutes for some starters to come out,but nothing did.He said we had had our starters (cold bread and 10 olives, and this for five people!)Then a waitress came over and asked if we would like to see the desert menu!!!!!

I said we had to go (to meet some other friends) and I would pay for the wine/bread,as we had been there an hour and that was all we had been given.I was asked to pay the total bill for the food we had ordered, but not received!!I refused of course, but what an insult!!After I paid for the wine we were further insulted "I hope you understand what its like to run a business"  (well I do actually)and my Mother and daughter were told,by the owner, "McDonalds is just down the road"The waiting staff were friendly but inexperienced, but the problems seem to be in the kitchen, and most definitely the owner!! AVOID!!!  unless you`re a fan of Fawlty Towers maybe........

What a shame. When I was there it was pretty quiet, one large party, a few couples and fours, everybody seemed to be enjoying themselves. I have been once more with my two sons, yet again a good experience, but this time the food wasn't as good/flavourful as it could have been, but we all enjoyed the experience. - Martin
