In the Independent's list The 50 Best of the 50 Best, published in December, the wonderful tearoom at the Watermill in Little Salkeld was named one of the country's two top tearooms. Not really surprising, it's hard to beat the location, the home baked treats made with home stone ground flour, the lovely room with the stream running outside the window, the wholesome soups...we love it! So – big congratulations to Nick and Ana Jones, who have been running the organic Watermill since the 70s. Considering you can also call ahead and get a tour of the mill, this must surely be one of Cumbria's top foodie destinations.
This is the stream powering the mill.

Cumbria is at the heart of the Real Bread Campaign, which was initiated by Melmerby resident Andrew Whitley, author of the acclaimed book Bread Matters. This truly inspiring book, which includes both a comprehensive look at bread and the baking industry as well as excellent recipes and tips for home bakers, is now out in paper back, and can be bought online.

Andrew, who founded The Village Bakery (today owned by Bells of Lazonby) believes that consumers are being cheated of much nutritional value in today's mass produced breads. The campaign is promoting bread which is made in a sustainable way and with all the inherent nutritional value of good flour and natural ingredients kept in and additives kept out. The Village Bakery has a great shop and restaurant, w ...

Today is the first day on which you can send your hand-crafted entry to the 2010 Marmalade Competition, organised by Jane Hasell McCosh at Dalemain House near Penrith. This competition, and the World's Original Marmalade Festival (on Feb 13-14, 2010) have become a well-established high point during the dark Cumbrian winter.

New for this year is that entrants to the Artisan category, who manage to achieve what the organisers call a double gold standard, will have their marmalade on sale at Fortnum & Mason in Piccadilly in London. This prestigious store has Britain's largest number - 24 - of marmalades on sale. It ...

If you want to give someone a really tasty treat for Christmas, we suggest you order a hamper full of Cumbrian goodies. As many food producers were hit, some very hard, in the recent floods, it's also a good way of supporting the local community.
There are plenty of companies offering these kinds of gifts, and they represent a wide variety of the county’s artisan food producers. There is something for everyone, from delicious savoury specialties such as mustards, chutneys, cheeses, smoked fish and air dried meats to sweet treats including jams, puddings and confectionery, and not forgetting the great drinks from the county, particularly all the great ales and that most Cumbrian of all alcoholic delights, Damson gin.
Lakeland Hampers have an online shop and a range of Christmas hampers from around 20 pounds to well over 100. Penrith’s great deli

Anyone who regularly travels the UK's motorways knows what an absolute gem the family owned Tebay services in Cumbria are, with their wonderful, home cooked and locally sourced food, their ambiance and scenery and the marvellous farm shops. Tebay, owned an managed by the Dunning family, who also farm the surrounding land, have won awards before, but this one probably takes the cake. The Tebay services have been awarded the annual Grand Prix of Gastronomy by The British Academy of Gastronomes.
Fr left: John, Sarah and Barbara Dunning with Egon Ronay.

This is what the press release says: "The Grand Prix is/ /annually awarded for anyone or anything that has done most in the preceding 12 months to improve further the quality of food in ...

One of the county's Michelin star restaurants, Sharrow Bay, has decided it's time to promote Cumbrian food outside its own establishment. The company has just launched a range of soups and casseroles, which are sold in Lakeland, Booths, Waitrose and Harvey Nichols stores.

All the products include regional produce, which sometimes is narrowed down to a particular farm, sometimes is just designated from Cumbria, or indeed Northumberland. The ready-meals cost between £2.99 and £5.99 and include Butternut Squash Soup; Cumbrian Bacon & Country Vegetable Soup; Cumbrian Pork, Apple & Cider Casserole (in photo) and Wild Highland Venison Casserole. The recipes have been created by the restaurant's head chefs Colin Akrigg and Mark ...

The Cumbrian microbrewery scene has been thriving, to say the least, for the past decade or so, and continues to do so, with some of our local ale producers doing well in CAMRA's (Campaign for Real Ale) recently announced yearly awards. Well done to the Great Gable Brewing Company over in Wasdale for their Champion Beer of Britain Silver Medal award for Yewbarrow in the 'Real Ale in a bottle' section. This brewery is located at the top of Wastwater in one of the most stunning settings of any pub in the Lakes - so now there are at least two very good reasons to visit; the great landscape and the great ale. Other Cumbrian brewed beers in the CAMRA finals were: Dent Rambrau (Speciality beers) Jennings Bitter (Bitters) and Cumbrian Legendary Ales Loweswater Gold (Golden Ales)
