The second installment of the Taste Cumbria food festival will take place on September 24-25 in Cockermouth, so save that date! Last year was a phenomenal success, and a haven for food lovers with most of Cumbria's top artisan producers selling their products.

A new event this year will be the Secret Restaurant, a ‘pop-up’ restaurant, where each of the four chefs from Cumbria's Michelin restaurants L’Enclume, The Samling, Sharrow Bay and Holbeck Ghyll, will prepare a course of their choice in front of guests, who will be able to get up close and personal, watching each course being created and have the opportunity to take part in a Q&A session.

Last year, Charles Mitchell and Cynthia Fletcher retired from Cumbria to the region of Marche in Italy. Leaving behind busy schedules, their new life revolves around their old farm house and the creation of their garden, their orto. After neighboor Franco finally arrives to plough the terraces, Cinzia (aka Cynthia) can start planting out her veg...

Sure, we set off to pick wild garlic to make some soup – but the real revelation of the day turned out to be the wild garlic bread! Stay tuned.... Here's Lukie and me foraging for the lovely leaves along the river walk in Grasmere (whose land is this? no clue, but it seems a pity to waste all that lovely green stuff!)

These are the ingredients for the soup...300 g of wild garlic leaves to 1 litre of chicken stock. In hindsight I'd leave out the parsley; you really want to focus on the pure subtlety of the wild garlic....

Ivan Day on BBC 2 |

There's a new series on BBC2 (on weekdays at 6.30 pm), called Royal Upstairs Downstairs. Essentially, antiques expert Tim Wonnacott and chef Rosemary Shrager travel in the
footsteps of Queen Victoria, visiting the houses, castles and stately
homes she visited throughout her life. Wouldn't normally be something I'd switch on to...but there's a hidden treasure in these programmes. Cooking what the queen would have eaten at each house/castle is our friend Ivan Day. There are seven episodes left (counting tonight, Mar 10). Watch it on iPlayer and fast-forward to Ivan's sections – that's my suggestion.
Here he is making a game pie in his historic kitchen, where some of the series was also shot.

"Today we are embracing the negative!" said Jane Hasell-McCosh when we arrived, in the rain, at Dalemain House for the Marmalade Award ceremony yesterday. And indeed, they did – nothing could have put a dampener on this amazing competition and the people involved in it.
The biggest star is Jane herself, who, over five years, has managed to create a food event with global impact!

I say global, because a considerable number of the 1100 entered jars had actually made their way to Dalemain across oceans and continents. New for this year was the Marmalashes, an Aussie challenge, which was reported thus by Sky News down under:
"England might have beaten us in the
Ashes but a team of Aussies is sa ...
