Wild and Fruitful heads for Fortnum & Mason
By Cecilia on Tuesday, February 16, 2010 9:55 AM
Jane Maggs of Wild and Fruitful, who we wrote about here a couple of weeks ago, did indeed win the Artisan category of the Marmalade festival, with her Lemon & Lavender Marmalade. We tasted it – all the artisan entries could be tasted in the old barn – and it worked superbly, and had a strong marmalady taste. This now means that Jane's marmalade will be stocked on the shelves of Fortum & Mason on Piccadilly in London. So big congratulations to Jane, and her colleague Jill Perry!

Another coup for the Jumble Room
By Cecilia on Monday, February 15, 2010 9:18 PM
Jumble-Room-600px.jpg

The fabulous Jumble Room down the road from us in Grasmere, tops the list of the TimesOnline's 20 "great little restaurants in Europe", chosen by their food writers. The verdict:

"This is the heartiest, happiest restaurant in the Lakes, squashed into a corner cottage in Grasmere and serving hearty plates of stilton crostini, Lebanese lamb and pumpkin risotto. The food is as eclectic as the decor, a mad melange of country kitchen, 1950s kitsch and tart’s boudoir."

Hear, hear! Big congratulations to Andy and Chrissy!

Wild & Fruitful return to the Marmalade Comptetition
By Cecilia on Tuesday, February 02, 2010 2:35 PM
Jane Maggs, of Wild & Fruitful, must be Cumbria's top entrant into the Marmalade Competition held at Dalemain House during the 2010 World’s Original Marmalade Festival on February 14.

Jane, based in Wigton, won a Silver and two Bronze awards in the Artisan category of the 2009 .  She and her colleague Jill Perry are currently preparing her 2010 entries and will again be competing in the Artisan category, in which any winner of a double Gold award will this year have the opportunity to have their marmalade on sale in Fortnum & Mason, London.  Last year, Wild & Fruitful submitted its Seville Orange Marmalade with Whisky, Clementine & Cumquat Marmalade and Dark Seville Orange Marmalade. The first won Silver, whilst the other two both won Bronze.

Michelin stars in Cumbria back to four
By Cecilia on Saturday, January 16, 2010 6:40 PM
The Samling near Ambleside has regained the one Michelin star it held during 2005. The restaurant was one of 18 new one-star establishments to be named in the UK in the Michelin Guide Great Britain & Ireland 2010, which will be available from Wednesday Jan 20.

The Samling constituted the only bit of news as far as Cumbria is concerned. Three other restaurants have kept their one stars (year in brackets is the first year they were awarded a star): Holbeck Ghyll in Windermere, Sharrow Bay at Ullswater and the avant garde L'Enclume in Cartmel.

We reviewed L'En ...

Watermill is named one of two top tearooms by the Independent
By Cecilia on Thursday, January 14, 2010 1:18 PM
In the Independent's list The 50 Best of the 50 Best, published in December, the wonderful tearoom at the Watermill in Little Salkeld was named one of the country's two top tearooms. Not really surprising, it's hard to beat the location, the home baked treats made with home stone ground flour, the lovely room with the stream running outside the window, the wholesome soups...we love it! So – big congratulations to Nick and Ana Jones, who have been running the organic Watermill since the 70s. Considering you can also call ahead and get a tour of the mill, this must surely be one of Cumbria's top foodie destinations.

This is the stream powering the mill.

Bread "bible" now out in paperback!
By Cecilia on Wednesday, January 06, 2010 9:03 PM
Cumbria is at the heart of the Real Bread Campaign, which was initiated by Melmerby resident Andrew Whitley, author of the acclaimed book Bread Matters. This truly inspiring book, which includes both a comprehensive look at bread and the baking industry as well as excellent recipes and tips for home bakers, is now out in paper back, and can be bought online.

Andrew1_8422.jpg

Andrew, who founded The Village Bakery (today owned by Bells of Lazonby) believes that consumers are being cheated of much nutritional value in today's mass produced breads. The campaign is promoting bread which is made in a sustainable way and with all the inherent nutritional value of good flour and natural ingredients kept in and additives kept out. The Village Bakery has a great shop and restaurant, w ...

Today is the first day on which you can send your hand-crafted entry to the 2010 Marmalade Competition, organised by Jane Hasell McCosh at Dalemain House near Penrith. This competition, and the World's Original Marmalade Festival (on Feb 13-14, 2010) have become a well-established high point during the dark Cumbrian winter.

janemarmalader-600px.jpg

New for this year is that entrants to the Artisan category, who manage to achieve what the organisers call a double gold standard, will have their marmalade on sale at Fortnum & Mason in Piccadilly in London. This prestigious store has Britain's largest number - 24 - of marmalades on sale. It ...

Cumbrian Christmas hampers – a great gift and support for our community
By Cecilia on Tuesday, December 15, 2009 9:43 AM
If you want to give someone a really tasty treat for Christmas, we suggest you order a hamper full of Cumbrian goodies. As many food producers were hit, some very hard, in the recent floods, it's also a good way of supporting the local community.

There are plenty of companies offering these kinds of gifts, and they represent a wide variety of the county’s artisan food producers. There is something for everyone, from delicious savoury specialties such as mustards, chutneys, cheeses, smoked fish and air dried meats to sweet treats including jams, puddings and confectionery, and not forgetting the great drinks from the county, particularly all the great ales and that most Cumbrian of all alcoholic delights, Damson gin.

Lakeland Hampers have an online shop and a range of Christmas hampers from around 20 pounds to well over 100. Penrith’s great deli
