Marmalade Winners 2011
By Cecilia on Monday, February 14, 2011 3:19 PM
"Today we are embracing the negative!" said Jane Hasell-McCosh when we arrived, in the rain, at Dalemain House for the Marmalade Award ceremony yesterday. And indeed, they did – nothing could have put a dampener on this amazing competition and the people involved in it.

The biggest star is Jane herself, who, over five years, has managed to create a food event with global impact!
MAR-Jane.jpg

I say global, because a considerable number of the 1100 entered jars had actually made their way to Dalemain across oceans and continents. New for this year was the Marmalashes, an Aussie challenge, which was reported thus by Sky News down under:

"England might have beaten us in the Ashes but a team of Aussies is sa ...

There's No Taste Like Home...
By Cecilia on Monday, February 14, 2011 9:12 AM
LambCarving.jpg

There's no taste like home is the working title of a new ITV cooking programme, and I have been whether I'd be interested in taking part. It's a celebration of home cooking, and participants (3 from each region) will cook their signature dish, preferably something with ties to the family/history...so naturally, being Swedish (and if I get on the programme), I will cook a Russian Leg of Lamb. We have no idea why it is called Russian, but it's delicious and I ate it all through my childhood. And of course, living in Cumbria I have the perfect produce on my doorstep – in this instance a fantastic leg of Herdwick lamb from Yew Tree Farm near Coniston. To find out more about Yew Tree Farm and its ethos, read some of Car ...

Food Tourism Summit for Cumbria's food industry at Rheged
By Cecilia on Monday, January 24, 2011 3:53 PM
As part of the three-year package of support from RDPE to help develop the food and drink sector in Cumbria following the 2009 floods, a Food Tourism Summit will be held at Rheged on February 28 from 10.00 to 16.30. It's aimed at helping the county's food and tourism industries.

The summit is organised by the team behind Taste Cumbria (in Cockermouth last Sep), and this is how they describe the event:

"The Food Tourism Summit provides an opportunity to gain insight and share experiences, ultimately providing delegates with the right tools and tangible information for improved profitability.
Inspiring industry heavyweights including Guardian critic Matthew Fort and broadcaster Jay Rayner will be debating and presenting subjects including:
- How ‘keeping it local’ benefits Cumbrian businesses
- Menu planning vs. the bottom line
- Food and Tourism – how they help to sustain a regional economy

Cartmel starts monthly food market
By Cecilia on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 2:09 PM
We gather the first of Cartmel's new Food Markets happened back in September. This is an example of a village with a strong identity and passionate food producers who have taken it upon themselves to make a great monthly food market happen – these are often the best markets. We're excited to go along to the first one this year, on Friday March 18, 10-4pm; save the date!

One of the organisers is Martin Gott, who makes the beautiful ewe's milk cheese at Holker Farm Dairy, and who opened a fantastic cheese shop at the new Unsworth Yard in Cartmel in June last year. When you go to the market, don't miss a visit to Cartmel Cheeses, the baker and the wine merchant in the Yard, perhaps a spot of lunch at

Hawkshead Brewery expands beer hall
By Cecilia on Monday, January 17, 2011 4:42 PM
Alex Brody is taking the beer experience in Staveley's Mill Yard to a new level – in March Hawkshead Brewery opens its new Beer Hall (they've expanded into what was Organico's wine shop and restaurant). On their website they say: "It will bring the Brewery into the Beer Hall and The Beer Hall into the Brewery." Sounds good! Plus there's already a Beer Tapas menu served, which we're of course particularly interested in – described as Food with beer at its heart.
There is lots more information on the Hawkshead Brewery website.

This is what the exterior looks like:

Marmalade-Dalemain600px.jpg

As the new year begins, Cumbria looks forward to the winter season’s ”sunniest” food event – the Marmalade Festival at Dalemain House, in 2011 on February 12–13. This is really two events in one; it encompasses the World’s Original Marmalade Awards as well as an (extended) festival weekend at beautiful Dalemain House. There are several categories in the marmalade awards, including 11 different ones for individuals to enter as well as Artisan awards and B&B Awards. The weekend will of course include the prize ceremony for all the categories, which are judged by the Women’s Institute as well as local and national food experts. There will also be a number of classes, workshops, talks and activities for the whole family. For more info, visit

Annette Gibbons' fruity Christmas pudding
By Cecilia on Wednesday, December 08, 2010 5:09 PM
I have to confess, I had never dreamed of making my own Christmas pud until I watched Annette make hers – so fresh and fruity, with no flour (bread crumbs instead), and no fat. Just lovely gin soaked damsons, fresh apple and banana, lemon zest and a few other bits.

Ingredients-600px.jpg

The video of her talking about and making the pud is in the Christmas edition of Artisan-food e-magazine.

Here's the written recipe:

INGREDIENTS:
1 lb wholemeal breadcrumbs
6 oz brown sugar
4 oz gin soaked damsons
4 oz raisins washed
4 oz chopped mixed nuts
1 oz flaked almonds
1 eating apple grated
1 banana< ...
