It’s that orange time of year, not least in Cumbria, where we’re building up to our top foodie event of the year (in our opinion!) – The World’s Original Marmalade Awards, held this year on Feb 25-26 at Dalemain House. Jane Hasell-McCosh is running the competition, and its weekend festival, for the 7th year this year. Closing dates for entries in the competition is Feb 12 for the Artisan/B&B category and Feb 19 for the home made/amateurs category.

The Festival will include workshops from famous foodies Ivan Day and Dan Lepard. There will also be a Marmalade Concert, a Marmalade Church Service and an array of activities with a citrus twist. Past Artisan winner Perthshire Preserves said they ‘would suggest Dalemain Mansion ...

Brougham Hall Farm, south of Penrith, has
set up a box scheme to sell its Saddleback pork directly to consumers. Sarah
Harden, who breeds the Saddleback pigs, says she’s found that customers want to
know how much they are going to spend, and will then let Sarah know what their
requirements are, based on the size and make-up of their family. There are £25
and £50 boxes, or you can buy half a pig at £110 – and the meat is available
twice a month.

The second installment of the Taste Cumbria food festival will take place on September 24-25 in Cockermouth, so save that date! Last year was a phenomenal success, and a haven for food lovers with most of Cumbria's top artisan producers selling their products.

A new event this year will be the Secret Restaurant, a ‘pop-up’ restaurant, where each of the four chefs from Cumbria's Michelin restaurants L’Enclume, The Samling, Sharrow Bay and Holbeck Ghyll, will prepare a course of their choice in front of guests, who will be able to get up close and personal, watching each course being created and have the opportunity to take part in a Q&A session.
Katie Read, West Cumbria Tourism Manager says:

Wild Garlic Bread is a winner! |

Sure, we set off to pick wild garlic to make some soup – but the real revelation of the day turned out to be the wild garlic bread! Stay tuned.... Here's Lukie and me foraging for the lovely leaves along the river walk in Grasmere (whose land is this? no clue, but it seems a pity to waste all that lovely green stuff!)

These are the ingredients for the soup...300 g of wild garlic leaves to 1 litre of chicken stock. In hindsight I'd leave out the parsley; you really want to focus on the pure subtlety of the wild garlic....
