Farmers markets hit by theft
Martin's blog By admin on Tuesday, June 26, 2012 8:26 AM
Four of Cumbria's top farmers markets have been hit by theft as a van used to transport all the essential equipment has been stolen from its storage in the Lune Valley and four local markets now face the summer months without their stalls, generators and other equipment. Leanne Duerden, Market Co-ordinator, explains: “The white, long wheel base Ford Transit van was stolen from David Knipe’s farm at High Carlingill Farm near Tebay on Thursday (21 June). Inside were 15 green and white striped pop-up stalls, a generator, two blue and white umbrellas, weights, a PA system, signage and probably lots of other things that we take for granted.” She continues: “This equipment isn’t just used at Orton Farmers’ Market but is also shared with the markets at Brampton, Cartmel and Pooley Bridge so it is a huge loss. The team at Made in Cumbria are renting us some replacement equipment for the time being but, obviously, this is an additional cost and we are keen to locate ours and get it retu ...

Kendal College students cook at Castle Dairy
Cecilia's blog By Cecilia on Wednesday, February 29, 2012 11:40 AM
Some time around 2006 or 2007 we went for dinner at the Castle Dairy in Kendal, because it had been voted Restaurant of the Year (or something similar) by the readers of The Westmorland Gazette, and we were emailed by one of them about the excellence of the place...well, that taught me. We brought Matt and Josh along, spent over 90 pounds, and had the worst dining experience in a long time. The food was stodgy, bland and pretentious, the chef kept walking between the kitchen and the bar carrying bottles of wine, the owner/waiter stood by the wall staring at us eating throughout the meal (we were the only customers), and afterwards, as we read some sign or other outside about the history of the place, Matt (who is now a chef with Michelin experience) said: "The most historic thing about that place was the duck." We later found out that the person who had emailed us was the owner....

Needed to get that off my chest, as I refrained from writing a review – at t ...

Cecilia's blog By Cecilia on Monday, January 16, 2012 2:33 PM
It’s that orange time of year, not least in Cumbria, where we’re building up to our top foodie event of the year (in our opinion!) – The World’s Original Marmalade Awards, held this year on Feb 25-26 at Dalemain House. Jane Hasell-McCosh is running the competition, and its weekend festival, for the 7th year this year. Closing dates for entries in the competition is Feb 12 for the Artisan/B&B category and Feb 19 for the home made/amateurs category.

Saddleback straight from the farm
Cecilia's blog By Cecilia on Tuesday, January 10, 2012 11:52 AM

Brougham Hall Farm, south of Penrith, has set up a box scheme to sell its Saddleback pork directly to consumers. Sarah Harden, who breeds the Saddleback pigs, says she’s found that customers want to know how much they are going to spend, and will then let Sarah know what their requirements are, based on the size and make-up of their family. There are £25 and £50 boxes, or you can buy half a pig at £110 – and the meat is available twice a month.

The second installment of the Taste Cumbria food festival will take place on September 24-25 in Cockermouth, so save that date! Last year was a phenomenal success, and a haven for food lovers with most of Cumbria's top artisan producers selling their products.

A new event this year will be the Secret Restaurant, a ‘pop-up’ restaurant, where each of the four chefs from Cumbria's Michelin restaurants L’Enclume, The Samling, Sharrow Bay and Holbeck Ghyll, will prepare a course of their choice in front of guests, who will be able to get up close and personal, watching each course being created and have the opportunity to take part in a Q&A session.

Katie Read, West Cumbria Tourism Manager says:

Wild Garlic Bread is a winner!
Cecilia's blog By Cecilia on Tuesday, April 19, 2011 10:23 AM
Sure, we set off to pick wild garlic to make some soup – but the real revelation of the day turned out to be the wild garlic bread! Stay tuned....
Here's Lukie and me foraging for the lovely leaves along the river walk in Grasmere (whose land is this? no clue, but it seems a pity to waste all that lovely green stuff!)
WildGarlicBread11.jpg

These are the ingredients for the soup...300 g of wild garlic leaves to 1 litre of chicken stock. In hindsight I'd leave out the parsley; you really want to focus on the pure subtlety of the wild garlic....
