How lucky were the organisers – the first stunningly beautiful day for yonks. Unsurprisingly, the sun brought the crowds...and it took me two and a half hours to get from Low Sizergh Barn to the show car park. Never mind, it was a great day, and the food marquee was buzzing.

Newcomer Kendal Cordials here - Mike and Helen Hindle produce a variety of cordials out of their home...I tried the Lime and it was gorgeous. Give these guys a try when you get a chance. We'll come back with more info when we have it.

Some of the other usual suspects...Gerald Fowler of the Chilli Pepper Company, encouraging some young foodies to give his hot stuff a try. In the next few weeks, we will bring you the full story on how Gerald uses hydroponics to grow his chillies!

Peter Gott of Sillfield Farm. I bought some wild boar sausages Italian style (included chilli and herbs). Delicious!

I must say that as a Swede in the UK I have often bemoaned the state of British bread (give me a gritty rye any day)...well, not anymore! There are some fantastic bread bakeries in this county, and a few of them were at the show, including Staff of Life from Kendal, More! from Stavelely, and Broughton Village Bakery – shown here:

Tom Cropper (below) runs Howbarrow – that is, the organic food delivery company, which is based at Howbarrow Organic Farm in Cartmel. The farm itself is still run by Paul Hughes and Julia Sayburn (Julia is in charge of the growing while Paul runs Grange Bakery).

Anyway, new owners of Howbarrow organic shop and delivery (and brothers) Tom and Rich are specialised in what they do (they also run a similar operation called the Farmshed in Lancashire) and offer a fantastic range of organic fruit, vegetables, dairy, meat, fish, bakery - you name it. The leeks were great!

As part of the day's food activities there was a Young Farmers Club cooking competition, with three teams, from Kent Estuary, Furness and Grayrigg, who all had an hour to cook a meal under the banner of Climate Change. Apparently this is a competition that happens around the country, and the winning team of the day will go on to the National final at the Autumn show in Malvern at the end of September.

And this is their meal – I'm sorry I don't have the details of the starter, but the main was pork loin with celeriac, savoy cabbage, sage, bacon and chestnut. Looked wonderful.

Finally – there was a very popular local food court, and what a day to eat your Cumberland sausage buttie al fresco!
