Apple Day is an event across the country, and there is much to do around this date, October 21, all over Cumbria as well.
On Sunday October 18, at Acorn Bank Garden & Watermill, the National Trust organises its big yearly apple celebration, with activities for all the family. There are apple games for the children (small and big!) including bobbing, bowling and longest peel competition. There are also apple surgeries, identification and pruning demonstrations with the Northern Fruit Group and apple tasting.

For foodies, it's a great day out with several local food producers in place selling their goodies, including cheese makers Thornby Moor Dairy, Wardhall Dairy and Hadrian Organics - producers of the lovely organic Birdoswald hard cheese. The Watermill at Little Salkeld will be there selling their stone milled organic flours as will meat producers Askerton Castle, Deer'n'Dexter and maker of preserves extraordinaire Jane Maggs of Wild and Fruitful. Annette Gibbons OBE, local cook and food ambassador, will do food demonstrations and says she will show visitors how to make apple soup, apple and celery scones, Russett apple salad and a chocolate and apple betty, which is a bit like a crumble. The Apple Day event at Acorn Bank is open 11-4.30 and admissions are: adult £5, child £3, family £14 (including National Trust members).
There is more to learn about apples at the Beetham Nurseries, during the weekend of Oct 17-18. On the Saturday, you can go along and meet "The Apple Lady" Hilary Wilson, who is an expert at the skill of grafting, and is particularly knowledgeable about sourcing apple varieties suitable to the region's climate. On the Sunday the Kendal Beekeeper's Association will be there to do demonstrations and explain how important bees (currently in decline in this country) are for apples.
On Saturday October 3 there will be orchard walks, apple identification, cakes and jams, cookery demonstrations, story-telling, children's games and more at Orchard Barn, 32 Briery Bank, Arnside from 10am to 4pm - admission 50 p.
