For the entire half term week (Oct 24-31), a new and very promising food event, Kendal Festival of Food, is taking place in and around Kendal. Organisers say the purpose of the event is to get people to visit local producers, taste local food and buy local products, and they seem to have managed to get almost every food producer, shop and eatery involved in the activities. There is a fabulous 20 page programme which can be downloaded. Here are some top suggestions for those who are looking for food activities: • Low Sizergh Barn will have food tastings on during the weekdays from 10.30am to 3.30pm with some of the shop's favourite local producers offering tastings of their products.

• The Watermill Inn and Brewery in Ings will have 16 Cumbrian beers on the bar all week. • On Sunday Oct 25, there will be a chance to learn how to make sausages at Sillfield Farm, with farmer and local meat ambassador Peter Gott running interactive half hour workshops throughout the day.
 • On Monday Oct 26 there's a chance to meet a wealth of local food producers at an evening event in Kendal Town Hall. The evening includes a demonstration on the art of cheese making from Bob Kitching of Leagrams Organic Cheese. • On Tuesday Oct 27, you can go along to Low Sizergh Barn for a guided tour of the organic farm and a visit to the thriving community enterprise, Growing Well. • On Tuesday Oct 27, there's also a tour of Kitridding Farm with farmer Stewart Lambert and a chance to learn about their livestock, see the animals and hear how they farm at Kitridding. • On Wednesday Oct 28, Kendal College, which is home to a first class catering course, is running a food & wine tasting hosted by the Lakes Hotel School sommelier. • On Friday Oct 30, the Kendal Farmer's Market will have the added attraction of five cooking demos during the day, including cheese making with Martin Gott of Holker Farm Dairy, baking with Patrick Moore of Moore! bakery and cooking with chef Julian Ankers of Bridge Street Restaurant. There's lots more going on during the festival, so we advice you to check out the programme!
