Today is the first day on which you can send your hand-crafted entry to the 2010 Marmalade Competition, organised by Jane Hasell McCosh at Dalemain House near Penrith. This competition, and the World's Original Marmalade Festival (on Feb 13-14, 2010) have become a well-established high point during the dark Cumbrian winter.

New for this year is that entrants to the Artisan category, who manage to achieve what the organisers call a double gold standard, will have their marmalade on sale at Fortnum & Mason in Piccadilly in London. This prestigious store has Britain's largest number - 24 - of marmalades on sale. It sets a standard that is internationally recognised and is teaming up with the World's Original Marmalade Festival to potentially discover the next big name in marmalade, according to the press release from Dalemain. Jane Hasell-McCosh has also secured sponsorship from Tiptree, Rose's, Robertson's and others.
Judges include Cumbria on a Plate's Annette Gibbons OBE, Jasper Conran OBE, Dan Lepard, food writer and Guardian columnist and Cumbria's world renowned food historian Ivan Day, here shown giving an enlightning talk at the Marmalade Festival 2008.

Three classes are available to Artisan producers: Seville, Any Citrus and Marmalade With Interesting Additions. Entries will all be judged on appearance (set), taste (flavour and finish), texture and aroma. Entries for the Artisan category must be received by February 1, 2010 and can be accepted from January 4, 2010. More info on the festival website.
For home cooks the categories are: Seville Orange Marmalade; Romantic Marmalade, Citrus Marmalade, Military Marmalade - for home cooks with family in the Armed Forces in aid of Help for Heroes, Children's Marmalade - made by anyone under the age of 16, Dark Chunky Marmalade, Merry Marmalade - marmalade with alcohol, Man-Made Marmalade, and Clergy Marmalade - for ministers, rabbis, monks and anyone working with a religious group.
