Lambing time is nearly upon us  - don’t forget that as we are an open farm, you are very welcome to come up and see what’s going on. Opening hours  are the same as the shop - Wednesday through until Saturday 10 – 5pm.

Since the news broke a couple of weeks ago how watercress can help prevent cancer, we have sold out 3 times over! The Christmas rush on orders placed over the internet hasn’t died down! We still seem to be working at the same pace (minus the turkeys of course) as before Christmas. The hot bed is now alive with new modules, early potatoes  planted, next week we will have Rocket and spicy winter salad available for some of the boxes. Reg and Seb continue to put back together storm damaged tunnels and creating new permanent edged bed system.

Fairtrade Fortnight 26TH February – 11 March –Fairtrade is one of the strongest growth sectors in the consumer food market. It has strong parallels with the rise in organic food. Shoppers want to know where their food comes from – and the Fairtrade mark gives them the guarantee that it’s fairly traded and makes a positive difference to the lives of farmers and workers in the developing world. To do your bit, why not buy Fairtrade products where possible from now on – look out for the Fairtrade mark. Look at the Fairtrade page on our website www.howbarroworganic.co.uk to see what products we sell under the Fairtrade banner.

We’ve come across a new web site lots of seasonal ideas to inspire you through these winter months, check it out at www.vegbox-recipes.co.uk/recipes/recipes-index.php ,

Recipe – Broccoli and cream cheese soup - Fry a chopped  onion in some butter. When soft, add just the chopped stalks of a large head of broccoli. Cook & stir for a couple of minutes. Add some good stock and the heads of the broccoli and bring to boil. Simmer for couple of minutes. Add a very large dollop of cream cheese. Stir to loosen the lump. Blend until smooth, season to taste.

How do you look after your fruit and veg? Have you any top tips for storing? Sheila, here at the farm, suggests the following for getting the best out of your green leafy vegetables….Wash, shake gently, put in a plastic bag and store in the fridge.

Now for the Joke : How do you make gold soup? Answer – take 22 carrots…
