The swallows are back, a week early, only a couple of pairs at the moment but I know they will turn into a couple of hundred that will fly south in September. Our first year ever of not losing any lambs - a mild dry March  has helped. The beef cattle have settled in  and  making a good job of grazing the first flush of grass.

Home Composting - If you don’t yet compost your fruit and vegetable peelings then perhaps this offer through Cumbria County Council and Lancashire County Council might spur you on. They are offering compost bins very cheaply for homes in Cumbria and FREE to homes in Lancashire!
We would urge everyone to be doing it, even if you don’t have much of a garden, as it could make a big difference to how much rubbish is carted off to a landfill site.

For Lancashire click here  or call 0845 658 8550

The following article, although dated, is very interesting.

Food Miles - Have you ever considered where your vegetables are coming from? We think about it daily! Our veg boxes contain as much locally or regionally sourced veggies as we can muster. Inevitably at this time of year, there are the imports, but our policy is to only take veg that has been shipped instead of air freighted.

It is possible to eat well and keep the food miles low, but it does mean that you have to forget that you ever bought Kenya beans or baby sweetcorn, for example. Check out these websites for more info on food miles and emissions.

Saturday 12th May – Open Day at Howbarrow Farm – 2- 4pm - with a focus on JUICING with organic fruit and vegetables. There will be tastings, guided walks around the farm and the polytunnels, and the shop will be open.

Finally a couple of jokes!

Why do Swiss cows have bells?
Because their horns don’t work!

What goes up a fruit and down a vegetable?
A tomato – throw it up and it comes down a squash!
