Our spring continues to come and go! The recent dry, sunny weather has taken our spring to a trickle. For the third time this year we will have to buy water (prior to last year we had only had to do this twice in 20 years at Howbarrow). The hay meadow is full of flowering buttercups, gently wafting in the breeze - the grasses and flowers growing visibly daily as we race towards the summer solstice. We plan to camp out on the top of Howbarrow this year (lets hope the fine weather continues).
Today the farm was visited by Martin and Cecilia from www.artisan-food.com, with Martin taking - I’m sure from his previous work I’ve seen - some great seasonal photographs of the farm, and Cecilia asking pertinent questions about who we are, what we do and our ethical position on life, the universe and all that - the answer, not 42, but UK5!

We have taken delivery of a ‘can-o-worms’ composter this week. It’s designed to compost waste food using worms to recycle, producing a rich worm caste compost. I’ve heard mixed reports on the success of this multi stacking tray system. The instructions seem clear enough, but I suspect if we don’t look after the worms with love and care they will end up being recycled themselves!! (you’re not supposed to get the composter too wet, too dry, too hot, too cold...) Worms now arrived in the post, to the children’s delight and new home looking stunning, slightly mouldy food with worms joyfully eating ! and I’m sure heard to sing ‘Happy days are her again….” (www.recyclenow.com/compost).
Here we go again – what vegetable might you find in your basement? Cellar-y…… Why do potatoes make good detectives? Because they keep their eye peeled. - Paul
