Friendly Food & Drink has recently been set up by Geoff Monkman and Lorraine Stobbart. They both used to work at the Hawkshead Relish Company, but have now decided to go it alone. At the moment they are based at their farm, but they will be one of the producers operating out of the new Mill Yard complex in Staveley when that's completed. Geoff and Lorraine use fruit sugar, fructose, in all their products rather than cane sugar.

According to Geoff, fructose doesn't contain any of the tooth decaying acids, is not absorbed by the body and therefore does not encourage weight gain. It also has a low glycemic index which makes it suitable for diabetics. The range of producs include marmalades, jams, chutneys, curds and coulises. We tried the Beetroot and Bell Pepper Chutney at the Northwest Food Lovers Festival, and it was scrummy! Friendly Food & Drink will also be adding bakery products to their range in the near future. - Cecilia
